Great rant. What you said. Ditto. Etc, etc. Thank you for reading this bilgewater so I don't have to. There's a peaceful place in my mind where The New York Times used to be before I cancelled.

Bilgewater is always better second or third hand. Hang in there.

I’m a cook. My husband’s a poli sci prof. I keep it for the Cooking section and books and theatre, sometimes travel, ok art shows, and the essays about modern love people write in. The show is lovely as well.

The publication has become a primarily digital general interest magazine.

I just can't support the New York Times whitewashing TRump and that was why I made the decision to cancel my subscription after 35 years.

This. Every word of it. The NYT is complicit in where we are today through their failure to report the truth and their normalization of insanity.

Totally. Their “polls” we need a choke emoji

“‘Many voters”’... Screw off with that, you haughty fools”

“Many people are saying …” “Countless people with PhDs think my economic plan is brilliant …” “Many generals have told me, ‘Sir, what a brilliant tactical move …’”

What a revelation. This smart, capable, impassioned woman with a spectacular record, understands that she does not need to subject herself to a world of antagonism and snark. She lays out aspects of her plan every day. She should be asked “hard questions” to prove that she’s better than a guy who wants to jail his opponents and references an imaginary debate audience?

Bitch, please.

This is not a sincere endorsement. The billionaire class wants Trump in office. They're working hard to ensure he is presented in the best possible light to increase his chances of winning.

The endorsement of Harris is a way for them to claim that they are liberal, to claim the mantle of fairness and balance, and to be seen as a defender of liberty.

The NYT and the Wash Post got decades of credibility as anti-establishment muckrakers for their coverage of Watergate, and they would like to continue to have their cake (rich people in power) while basking in the adulation of progressives for a meaningless endorsement.

Expand full comment

Spot on. Both the WaPo and the New York Times want to have their cake and eat it too. I've cancelled both subscriptions and don't miss reading their BS one bit.

Yep! We, the people (and I have names) do not trust the corporate media.

The New York Times is a complete laughing stock. They even had the unmitigated gall to suggest that some of the problems we are facing now are due to the inability of Harris and Biden to resolve them, rather than to the fact that Republicans prevent meaningful legislation at every turn. I really want this newspaper to die a very painful death. They are an absolute disgrace.

Yes they are, Janet. Top to the endless bottom ...

That's the thing that really makes my blood boil! They never mentioned that there's a Congress that the president and vice president have to deal with and the Republicans do nothing but obstruct what they'd like to get done! It's absurd and frustrating.

WTF has the Times been doing other than giving Trump every possible advantage with their insanely biased headlines and nonstop coverage? I’ve lost almost every bit of respect I ever had for this rag.

Like I've said before, it is why I dropped my subscription to the NYT's and WAPO in March. It's also why I became a subscriber to several individuals here on Substack/Bulwark. Thanks for keeping us informed of their stance, such as it is.

Excellent rant but now I am screaming to the wall because you just can’t believe this 8th grade level lack of Civics understanding writing. First thought write to Mark Cuban and thank him for going on CNBC and setting Trumpett Joe Kernen straight on Tariffs and what happened to Carrier and John Deere with the dimwit known as Trump. The Times should just fold and stick to weddings and obits. Sick of it for hurting all of us. The timing of the endorsement is the worst of it. From July 21, 2024 until now they waited to do the endorsement. Shame. Thank you Earl. Hope your blood pressure is ok, mine took a hit. So grateful for your talent, compassion and heart.

Not that it will work but someone should inform the head honchos in charge of corporate media what Hitler did to the press when he rose to power. Because I wouldn't put it past tcfg, jd & the magats in Congress to do the same thing. https://arolsen-archives.org/en/news/nazi-germanys-schriftleitergesetz-the-end-of-freedom-of-the-press/

I've been saying that for a couple of years now! It's almost like they're auditioning to become TRump's State media outlets if he were to win. Well, they bet on the wrong horse and I hope they pay dearly for it.

It's the same sick game they've been playing for a very long time. If you will recall, the NYT editorial board enthusiastically endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016. The news staff, on the other hand, effectively tarnished and undermined her with their breathless and incessant coverage of the "emails scandal.” There was no deep coverage of Trump and his total unfitness to be president. He’s made it impossible for the EB to ignore his derangement this time. But the news staff once again has failed to cover "the greatest threat to our democracy since the civil war.” The NYT has not changed. This is their MO.

Did the NYT just realize tfg is a danger or is it that the blowback from readers is so massive they can't ignore it?

Maybe they just woke up to the fact that the impact of a second term for him would bring to each of them individually.

My guess is a combination of the 2 and that their readers are intelligent enough to have figured it out already.

Spot on Earl. The NYT and everybody else should have been screaming every day what a lunatic this guy is. Just this weekend with the comments about Kamala’s mental ability and that she was born this way are just another in a long line of comments showing how unfit for the presidency this guy is. Why do people who like him want to live in such a hateful country? Everyone is bad except them? Just hope enough people see or have seen this to make sure he never gets close to the Oval Office again
