When Our Judges are Above the Law
Cannon just the latest scoundrel to blast a hole in our teetering Democracy
I spent a career in the newspaper business, and talked to tons of lawyers while prosecuting stories. I don’t remember ever getting a straight answer out of one of them.
Me: “So the fact it has been proven your client lied on the stand means we can now expect perjury charges, is that correct?”
Lawyer: “I’d be careful about getting into any absolutes in cases like this one. If you were to hypothetically delve into this, purely for speculative reasons, however, you could come to the conclusion that this is in the realm of possibility. But we must be prudent to make sure this is properly adjudicated before leaping into any ridiculous and damaging conclusions.”
Me: “So hypothetically speaking, he perjured himself?”
Lawyer: “I don’t deal in hypotheticals.”
Look, I don’t want to be too hard on lawyers, because thank God for ‘em. Without lawyers, journalists would be the most hated folks on earth who draw a paycheck while hustling for the truth.
Here’s where I also say, I have friends and family who are lawyers. They seem to be doing good, necessary work, but I wouldn’t sit down at a card table with any of ‘em.
One thing the past six, gruesome years has taught us is there is an endless supply of lawyers and judges who are just flat morally busted.
Bill Barr, Rudy Giuliani, Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, Sidney Powell, John Eastman, Michael Cohen ...
This is just off the top of my head. I’m sure I missed about 407 others, who will lie to you while smiling.
Well, another name just shot up to the top of the list: Judge Aileen Cannon.
