You are one of the few writers that captures the level of horror I feel inside every single day. Thank you for that.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

You're welcome.

Too damn many people aren't dealing with this honestly, and they are doing us a great disservice.

This was a set of conversations over the past few days. The "I don't do politics" crowd along with the "can't we just give them the benefit of the doubt" (um - no - hell no, no grace, no passes)

What we know (from personal, clinical, business experiences) is that there are people out there, living among us, who DO NOT CARE - are not affected by the experiences, suffering, etc of others... because it doesn't affect THEM.

Which is a tough point to get to for many people (full confession: retired therapist here, family member w mental health issues... this is a hard point to hit, accept).

The cognitive dissonance for many, the discomfort is impossible for some - for others - they're pretty much revealing who and what they are: THEY DO NOT CARE.

But that's not an acceptable thing to say out loud... so some in our neighborhood are still trying to fly under "well, we voted on abortion.... " bullshit.

No. Just.... no.

So in some interactions, we nod, offer strained smiles.... and know we can NOT and will not trust many of these folks moving forward. Their silence, their lack of action, their equivocations, etc speak loudly.

They're not going to be the people offering shelter to neighbors or others ("will you hide me?" questions come up here... )

Sad. Crazy. Scary time

Thank you, D. Earl for writing

You're so right.

I agree with you, Erin. I have to step away from Substack frequently because I become so enraged by the things that trump and his evil cohorts are doing that I am afraid that I will have a heart attack. That is the reason that I no longer watch television. I can’t bear to see or hear any of them because they are so vile and evil.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

I totally get it, V.

Annie's avatar

I'm right there with you, Virginia. I normally only watch Heather Cox Richardson for my television news. I pay for youtube without commercials for around $15/month so I can choose content and those I trust to deliver news to me on days I can handle it. For example, last Saturday night I watched HCR as she talked about Alex Pretti's execution. She told viewers not to watch the video if we hadn't already seen it and on that day, I took her advice, knowing my heart and psyche couldn't handle it.. Some days I have to take a total break from looking at emails because I need a break from reading anything else about the most talked about despicable human on earth.

john's avatar

Annie, I also enjoy HCR, who seems to have a great "read" of the world we have slipped into. I saw both Alex Pretty's death and Rene Good's killing. I agree with your description of Trump as the "most despicable human on earth. John NG

You perfectly stated what I was thinking! Thank you!

I feel the exact same way Erin. It's oddly comforting to know that other people are as infuriated, and horrified, as I am. But, we have just got to keep fighting.

Olynpuss's avatar

I’m in the UK and reel in horror reading about events in America. I truly don’t know how I’d cope if our home grown Trump-lover, Farage got anywhere near power! Unfortunately, it seems too easy to bind together those of a racist bent.

Jo Gibbs's avatar

my aunt(in Dorset) does not like Trump one bit but I think she and her husband are pro Farage. I do not understand how the British can watch this deteriorating nation and not see the red flags Farage is waving at them. Any insight?

Olynpuss's avatar

Even two close friends (one of whom was extremely senior in the government) frighten the hell out of me with their conspiracy theories and fears of Muslim infiltration. I try to rationalise it but I think it comes down to fear of the unknown; loss of culture; being wealthy but not super wealthy and finally, both are centre right politically and the demise of the ‘old style Conservative Party’ has left them homeless.

Jo Gibbs's avatar

That is unnerving! A senior person in government? Sigh. How on earth do seemingly educated individuals get so twisted? I assume to view the world as they wish it to be. I think the religious find that an easier exercise

Kevin Cowan's avatar

The same way that some people supported brutalizing and torturing Native Americans, socialists, the Japanese, hippies and so on. There has always been a percentage of the species that enjoys seeing this violence enacted on others.

I would ask the "Make America Great Again" cult how in the hell they think the last decade has made anything "great." We have literally watched the republic crumbling, and that erosion is gaining momentum with the demented felon's second turn at bat. I don't see how ANY of this is making anything "great" in any way, shape or form.

Sam Ray's avatar

A - Narcissists have a 100% selfish view of what "great" means.

Dble T's avatar

Kevin, they would tell you it is now great because they can cast their nasty aspersions on all with no guilt.

Ramona Grigg's avatar

My big question too. You might give them the benefit of the doubt the first time, but TWICE?? There’s no understanding them and there’s no forgiving them. And there’s no forgetting the damage they’ve done.

Thank you for keeping these thoughts out there front and center. The voters did this. We can blame the liars, the propagandists, and the money bags, but in the end the voters sealed our fate.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

Yep.

And it was actually three times, my friend.

Ramona Grigg's avatar

Right! Ugh…

Annie's avatar

Ramona, I will never believe he won the 2024 election with the the number of votes he supposedly received-just enough to prevent an automatic recount in all the swing states. And with the huge assist from Musk in PA . Why anyone would not seriously question the results of an election by someone who lives to lie, cheat, sue and grift his way through life is unfathomable-especially when he rarely spills the truth, like "I don't need your votes" and the comments Musk made in an interview with Tucker Carlson in Butler, PA following the "assassination attempt" where he states, "If he loses, I'm f*****." referring to how many years he'd spend in prison if DJT won.

Stevens's avatar

I often wonder about that, and then am reminded that a measly 6,000,000 less people voted for Harris than did Biden. They couldn't vote for Harris because...reasons.

Dble T's avatar

I have a "friend" that didn't vote for VP Harris for...reasons. We have barely spoke since because I just can't see a reasonable person on the other end of any conversation we might have.

Ruby Slipper's avatar

And here we face the strong possibility of the orange freak cheating to help the MAGA/GOP win midterms. Even the NY times has an editorial warning about this possibility.

Elaine Richards's avatar

They tried 3 times but failed once.

Sarah Gillian Bower's avatar

Actually no the “voters” didn’t seal a fate!!! Fucking Musk did the fate! He bought that goddamn election! yes voters voted. We voted for the first time in my fucking life and I was 70+ years old so I need to ask you this question::: how you could think that the voters caused this?? they did not!! Elon Musk did this. He even admitted it so don’t blame it on people who actually did vote and those of us who hate voting with every fiber of our fucking being actually went out and tried with our heart and soul to do the right thing and for what? so some asshole with $1 trillion could just change it because he could?? No—-voters didn’t do this !! Musk did this and you know it!! 😡😡😡

Ramona Grigg's avatar

Seventy million eligible voters chose not to vote in the 2024 election. If even half of them had voted, the numbers for Kamala would have been high enough not to be disputed. She would have won, hands down, and nobody could have questioned it.

Let’s say Musk did mess with the ballots. If enough people had voted for our side it wouldn’t have mattered. He couldn’t have made a difference. The electoral college couldn’t have made any other choice but to give the presidency to Kamala Harris.

But why would you hate voting? It’s the only real voice Americans have. We can and should make a difference at the ballot box. It’s a right and it’s a duty.

Ruby Slipper's avatar

Its no different than mass murdering indigenous for their land, or enslaving large numbers of Africans, or sending Japanese to camps, turning away Jews seeking refuge during WW2. Additionally, acting against early immigrants coming here via Ellis Island, treating women as property etc etc etc. There is a sizable number of people who will always feel a need to be superior to others. It doesn't matter if they are financially struggling, as long as they can have that feeling, however false, they don't and won't give a damn. Plus, they will never, ever vote for a Democrat.

pete gee's avatar

All the way from the Antipodes, you know, the no-count rest of the world, daily - in horror - we ask HOW!

Because Trump is just the barometer.

Infantile, narcissistic, hypocritical , greedy and morally vile is too much of your end capitalism nation.

When the majority of you face up to the inherent vacuousness in your culture and particularly to the treachery of your GOP and moneyed monsters, it might be possible to turn this disaster ( for all of us) around.

So long as you all VOTE.

Yet, by that time, will there be an electoral process available in the Land of the Free?

Bonnie Sommer's avatar

What you say is so true. Once again I can’t hit Like because I don’t like any of it. Having followed the link and read the post about the corruption of the voting machines, I fear that the course is set.

Elaine Richards's avatar

I watched a video of the orange one b4 the latest election telling "my Christians" that they need vote only one more time because it will all be fixed in the future. And we know what he meant by fixed. Unbelievable. Another video showed him telling his followers that they he didn't care for them and that he just needed them to vote. He ONLY cares for himself and no longer cares who knows it because they will follow him to their dooms no matter what. Shocking and sad.

tomhr's avatar

his Christians ? oh ha ha ha ...they're as GREEDY as he is..watch

Your description brings back memories of Jimmy Baker and Tammy Fey. They would tell some grifting story and the phones would light up with donations. I used to watch that shit and laugh as I made my lunch for work (I was a carpenter) and I only watched it because there was nothing else on that I could watch for 15 minutes or so before walking out the door. Where did those to grifters end up, she's dead and he went to prison, although he's out now and back at it, I think? This is what helped drive me away from religion.

tomhr's avatar

I talk to a full-on QAnon quack 3 or 4 times a year for 15 minutes. It keeps me updated on the crazy from a first-hand perspective. Saw her just after the country-wide cold snap recently. She seriously believes that the Democrats and their weather-changing machine made that weather. Further, that machine creates oily snow that does not melt. Her opinion is that Democrats do nothing but sow hate and division. Fifteen minutes is the top of what I can take, but it's good to hear it directly from the crazy so I am reminded they exist. I mean, COME ON, how does anyone support this?!

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

If we can make a weather machine like that, does she think we wouldn't come up with something that would transfer her to Jupiter?

Annie's avatar

Well, MTG used to support this and now she doesn't, so maybe there's hope for some people.

virginia arthur's avatar

Your question of “how can those so called ‘Christians’ support him” is answered in your question. They are not true Christians. They do not follow the teachings of Jesus in thought, word, and deed as we were taught to do in Sunday School and in Church. We all sin and we all trip up, but that does not mean that we have rejected what we were taught to believe. Look at those people with whom trump has surrounded himself. None of them are true Christians, even though some wear those big crosses around their necks. That is all for show.

john's avatar

virginia, I am a Catholic from a very Catholic family. To my surprise some of my Catholic nephews became Trump supporters, despite his abortion support and other political positions. I agree with you about trump....it is part of his fakery. John NJ

virginia arthur's avatar

Thank you, John. trump once said that he never asks for forgiveness because he has never done anything for which he needed forgiveness.

so true,my bro. lives in Daytona, his street is always being canvassed by scammers, (young kids) selling watered down purple spray cleaners,,,i saw one of them at the L-mat in town ,he had a HUGE GOLD CROSS around his neck..."oh yeah , those old folks see that cross ? you can sell them ANYTHING ! John Pavlovitz, pastor for over thirty years, has been effective at calling out Christian nationalists. I encourage people to read him. In another time these people were the white hooded goons who terrorized people of color and then were the elders at church passing the plate. I know alot of them - I just don't have contact with them anymore. What's helped me is realizing there will always be hard core supporters of Trump. They ignore facts. They ignore lies. He is their god. Hitler still had supporters after he offed himself in a bunker. Tojo still had fanatical supporters after Japan surrendered. Jim Jones convinced people to drink poison. But what I also see is a national movement rising against Trump. Minneapolis broke open the light. And arresting Don Lemon was the worst mistake these Nazi goons could make. People are madder and more energized to fight back. If Trump was winning, they wouldn't be squeezing so hard to end dissent. And everyday our side grows.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

An optimistic take, Rita.

And I share it.

Rita Parker's avatar

I know it will get worse. I've seen a cornered snake strike back. But if I didn't have hope we'll succeed eventually, I wouldn't be able to survive this.

john's avatar

Rita, I think that you have a keen sense of things as you detail your sense of where we are. I am hopeful that Minneapolis, and the Killing of W.Pretty and Rene Good, might be our "Kent State", which could turn the country against Trump. John NJ

Thank you, Rita.

Earl you said:

And why don’t they come to my hometown in Madison, Wisconsin, and interview 13 of us who didn’t vote for Trump? That would make for some colorful copy.

IF they did that it would be both-siding the issue and liberals are supposed to go crazy over both siding... We only both sides things to make the GOP look good </snark>

The major media sits on the sidelines and lets TRUMP do whatever he wants... they are useless. Luckily there is Enough Already but I wish it were read more widely.

"Trump says and does the awful things they think, so they don’t have to, and they positively love him for it. He’s their garbage man."

Evil has always been here just waiting its chance to come out. Look at the Salem Witch Trials, our treatment of Native Americans, slavery, the KKK, the internment of Japanese citizens during WWII, the assignations of JFK, MLK and RFK Sr, the school shootings… I could go on and on. The difference now is that evil controls our government, making it so much harder for us to stop it.

Good article Earl. Why do they follow this despicable jerk? Many are self centered exactly as he. Some look for scapegoats & he tells them what they want to hear. Some listen to only propaganda. Some are followers who can’t break from their circle. Some just are not very intelligent & are easily manipulated. I think they all have one thing in common Earl. They are mean spirited people. It is the hate Earl. They just don’t like being mean, they love it. And when they can congregate together, they love the all the hate around them. Look at the old film clips of Hitler talking to the diehard Nazis. They love it. It is the Evil, Earl. They are enthralled with it. They are sick Earl. It has always been around, it always will be. The good people, as always, must rise together to defeat it. Once again, we will defeat it!!

Marguerite Foster's avatar

It's is about hatred of people not like themselves. trump spews hatred all day everyday; he encourages his supporters to hate who and what he hates and encourages them to act out that hatred. What his supporters haven't figured out is he hates them too, but he loves them buying his made in China crap and sending him donations. He is the epitome of a conman/grifter, always has been always will be.
