I tell my grown children that I would miss them terribly, but I would support their move to a safer and saner country. If I were younger and much healthier, I’d go too.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

I am glad they are safe, Margaret, but gutted and angry as hell that we have a regime that is driving us toward the very same hell that housed Hitler's Nazi Germany.

How DARE they.

Sandi Randle's avatar

If I were you, I would join them. Now that so many countries hate us, my grown children are having a hard time finding one that will accept them.

Megan Ross's avatar

I was getting all of my ducks in a row to move to either Spain or Portugal, but at 63, and struggling with some health problems, I finally realized it just wasn't feasible. If I had kids, I would definitely encourage them to get the hell out of here. The USA is failing, but we just have to keep fighting for our country. I truly feel that some of my health problems are caused by the stress I'm under, because I just can't ignore what's happening to us, and it's really affecting my health. Be well.

Annie's avatar

Megan, I feel you. I wake up in the middle of the night now, every night, my nervous system on high alert. In the morning I wake up depleted and depressed. Last night my brain was fixating on a phrase about ICE, trying to compose a line in a poem. I couldn't shut the obsessive thoughts down and began coughing uncontrollably. Tried to open my window to breathe fresh air (even though it was sub zero) and it was frozen shut. Had to get up, make a cup of tea and play NYT Spelling Bee to rid my mind for a time of the nightmarish images that are our daily reality now.

I'm a morning, evening and middle of the night meditator (listen to guided meditations on Insight Timer app) and that usually really helps me move from fight or flight into rest and digest mode, but even meditating didn't work to soothe last night. It's hard to look away from the daily onslaught of frightening news. But our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health depend on finding a way to take breaks from it. We have to find things to ground us-like this morning when I watched a pair of cardinals landing on dried flowers in the snow-covered garden, pecking for seeds. Or the three fluffed up robins, sitting together on a branch outside my back door, looking in at me yesterday. I resolve to get in the car, brave the slippery streets and get some birdseed today.

On the rare occasions when I take an entire day or at least stop consuming news content after a certain time of day, my mind and body get out of fight/flight mode. The news is always there tomorrow and without a doubt, whatever we focused on the day before will be something new or changed completely, based on the whims of the thief-in-chief. Getting out of the house and walking in nature helps but right now there's so much snow and deep cold here, it's not possible to be out for long. So I make calls to the two Republican Senators in my state, hoping they'll somehow locate their humanity, grow a pair, and stand up for the common good of their constituents instead of continuing to support those focused on evil and destruction. Take care of you, Megan.

Megan Ross's avatar

Thank you Annie. Your thoughtful words have helped me remember that simple things, such as meditation, help. I used to take a long walk at least twice a day with my dog, but I'm experiencing heart palpitations and it gets real scary when my heart beats so fast that I feel like I'm going to pass out. So, not being able to take my two walks per day has been a huge downer for me. Deep breathing has been a lifesaver lately, just to calm myself down when I read about whatever heinous thing TRump and his Clown Car Cabinet have done that day. We'll get through this, and it's a comfort knowing that people like you are out there. Be well.

Annie's avatar

Megan, I began taking an herbal tincture of Hawthorn several years ago, sometimes I combine it with Motherwort. Both are heart tonics and it really helps with my heart palpitations. I take it every night before bed and also during the day if I feel my heart starting to go out of rhythm. There are studies done by the NIH that support the use of Hawthorn for cardiovascular help.

Megan Ross's avatar

Thank you for the information! I appreciate it.

I am sorry it has come to this for Megan as I am here because of the spouse’s health. He is 80 and can’t leave. I am 74 and am too old to go. We must resist as best we can

When I was a teenager back in Western PA the town library had the complete set of Great Books Of The Western World and The Harvard Classics. Two volumes of the Great Books included the text of Gibbons Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire. When I read those volumes I thought that I would never see anything like that in real time...

Turns out I AM seeing that in real time--50 years later seeing the decline and fall of America...

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

Yep.

And all by design.

Megan Ross's avatar

My question for these people who want to see us fail is, WHY?! It's absolutely mind-boggling.

I think that most of them -- the maggots -- don't get it. I believe that they are illiterate of history so they have no clue that what is happening here has happened many times, and in many places, before this. The others, the orange pedophilic sadist for sure, have a vested interest in propping up pukin.

Kerri Grover's avatar

I feel the same way. My son is in Germany working and is supposed to come back for a few friends weddings this summer and talked of bringing his girlfriend along for a trip to where we lived when he was growing up. Now hoping he does none of these trips, which means not seeing him, which breaks my heart but it is not safe here. And I’m scared to go to Germany just because I would have to deal with officials here coming in and out of the country. The trip is expensive and I don’t have money for attorneys to save me from what could possibly happen during the coming and going. It’s ridiculous, I love to travel but now scared to do so.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

You bringing up another element, Kerri. My son-in-law is not a U.S. resident, and rightfully untrusting of our fascist DHS.

Kerri Grover's avatar

My sons girlfriend is also not American and I’m concerned she may not be treated well if they were to come here so yes, I completely understood the fact that your son in laws would be in that same position. It’s ridiculous that any of us have to have these concerns due to what is going on here.

Megan Ross's avatar

I can't say that I blame your daughter for not wanting to come to this shithole country at this time. Can you go visit her? It would be a nice break for you, and a chance to see your loved one. I have to admit, I'm envious of her. We are now the pariah of the world, thanks to TRump and his unqualified, disgraceful Clown Car Cabinet. One thing that really surprises me, is it a lot of Europeans and Canadians, while being scared of what's happening, have sympathy and empathy for We the People who don't support this madness. There are days when I just feel like burying my head in the sand, and my hope of restoration is waning, but, we have to fight on. There's absolutely no other choice. 🇺🇸

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

I'm in the middle of move, but, yes I get over there.

But it's NUTS they are rightfully scared to come here.

Teri Gelini's avatar

Earl I fully understood haw they are reacting…,safety first and coming in and out of the US is dangerous. I have a hard time seeing FIFA here as how are the athletes protected? The stands can possibly expect to be full. The Olympics are a whole other concern…

kdsherpa's avatar

Hopefully FIFA will abandon the U.S. I've heard whispers about that. It looks highly unlikely, unfortunately.

Rita Parker's avatar

Then we have the soulless, sociopaths like Megyn Kelly who blame Alex Pretti for his own death. If she got hit by a truck and died today, I wouldn't care.

Megan Ross's avatar

It's just sad. Friends from Europe who wanted to come visit me, have no desire to come now. Good luck with your move. That's definitely not one of my favorite things to do! Be well.☺️

Vague Craig's avatar

It seems sensible to me.

A husband could be targeted at the border, due to his accent or a misunderstanding over a colloquial word or phrase. Other British citizens have been detained for weeks during this past year. It's absolutely wrong, but that's the very essence of this administration is it not? They don't care.

Family is everything, so their safety must surely be paramount.

Teri Gelini's avatar

You have just written what I was going to write

Just the fact that we have the benefit of hindsight with the history of Hitler, Mussolini, and other fascist regimes, makes our precarious state even more baffling and horrific. Why any American and true patriot would tolerate what's going on right now in the United States is beyond me. I know the majority of us do not want this. And we are fighting as hard as we can. The rest are either ignorant of what's happening, or are in favor of it, for whatever unimaginable reason. While those in favor are totally lost, we can change the complacency of the ignorant by advocating for the boycott of anything American right now. Until they feel the repercussions, they will continue to be silent. I only hope the rest of the world will help us get our country back. Boycott the World Cup, the Olympics, tourism and travel, all of it. Make them feel what it will be like going it alone. I'm afraid that's the only way to get their heads out of their collective asses.

I just wish Biden had put someone like Sally Yates in rather than the feckless-at-best Merrick Garland. Garland moved FAR too slowly pursuing the ringleaders while specifically focusing on the little people. He should have indicted Trump in Jan of 2021. Instead, he waited...and waited and then when it was too late, he set Jack Smith up for failure.

Megan Ross's avatar

I'm right there with you, Kevin! I'm STILL pissed off about Merrick Garland dragging his feet, and I know it doesn't do me any good to commiserate about it, but I think about it every damn day. UGH!

I-Can't-Even's avatar

I agree. Then I always remind myself that DOJ prosecution would not have been necessary if McConnell had done the right thing after Republicans in the House joined Democrats to move impeachment forward.

Australian here. ( and long ago from the north of England)

Not only will I not visit your country for the same reasons as your daughter, I also won’t attend professional meetings in the US either, which are huge boosts to host economies. I have to add the thought of crossing your borders, handing over my social media accounts and privacy, and facing potential capricious, unpredictable denial of entry, deportation or worse, detention in an ICE facility and physical violence just for being progressive and opposed to this regime, is an added huge disincentive. America is not safe right now, there are thugs shooting people on the street, and the rule of law is very selectively applied and cannot be relied upon. I too feel so sorry for all the lovely , kind, decent Americans I have met over many visits over the years. The US is engaged in massive self harm, it’s obvious, and shocking that so many Americans can’t or won’t see it.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

Well, we have billion-dollar propaganda network setup by one of your countrymen that is poisoning people's minds.

We'll all be better off when he is finally dead and gone, Amanda.

Could not agree more, but his kids appear to be no different, so I’m not sure what will change, apart from the trend to abandon legacy media. There was a huge petition with 500000 signatures to parliament to address their stranglehold on our media as well, which effectively went nowhere.

The reality of the complete erosion of the dis-united states is impacting every one of us. The puppet masters must fail. Ripping communities, families and societies apart will be a challenge for anyone left once the regime burns to blowing ash. The entire framework of the government must be redesigned.

And the sub-humans involved with Epstein must pay!

Chauncey Gardiner's avatar

I think your daughters have the right perspective on America right now. If you really love America, and want it to return to its senses, you won't do anything that allows the regime, or others, to believe you're alright with any of this.

Every foreign visit and every foreign dollar spent in Trump's USA is an equivocation, a tacit endorsement of America as it stands under the current regime, and an enabling counterweight to the majority of decent Americans who argue that Trump is destroying America's place in the world.

The best thing we can do for America now, both internally and externally, is to cease all activities that suggest that things are operating normally and that we'll continue supporting the nation "right or wrong". Americans, let alone foreigners, need to be willing to strike, resist, and cause enough economic and political pain to force change. Let the tourism, global travel, and hospitality industries struggle to the point that they assert political pressure on the regime, or at least stop sending them money.

Saddle up Earl, and join the British Airways frequent flyer program (boycott American carriers too!).

Five years ago, my son and his family moved to Tennessee because they had grown to hate California’s politics, high taxes, blah, blah, blah. At the time I felt he was abandoning me, like moving to another country or even another planet. He has become even more entrenched in Republican ideology. He won’t engage with me about politics because he can’t/won’t see or admit that I’ve been right about djt since 2016. I visited at Christmas, but the news cycle has precluded any communication since New Year’s Eve. I’m sick at heart because he supports this murderous regime despite the fact that his own immigrant grandfather, if he was still living, would likely be swept up in these immigration actions due to being listed on his immigration papers as having “BROWN” skin even though he was from Serbia.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

I am really, really sorry, Elizabeth.

These are the worst stories.

Sending love.

You write that Europe et. al. is not without it defects either. True. But an important aspect is that Europe HAS BEEN through a murderous fascist\nazi experience, and the laws of most EU countries (as well as of the EU itself) do what they can to prohibit the re-emergence of these political movements. The U.S. has not had the dictator\fascist experience, and has always claimed to be immune from such stuff ("it can't happen here"). So now, the U.S. is learning the very hard way. >Nobody< is immune from fascism, especially when obscene sums of money support it. These are very dangerous times.

I refer to this link for further information about Europe's attempt to minimize fascism. You have to use the entire link (good grief) or do your own with the query "is fascism against the law in europe".

You spoke well sir in what you have written. I'm glad your daughters are safe here with us, am sure the Geordies of the North East will have taken them under their wing and adopted them as one of their own.

You have described exactly how we see America now, it is so sad for us. The U.S. had so much potential you all seemed gloriously unaware of it. If you did realise it Trump would never have gained the presidency the first time let alone twice. But that happened with Russian help as Brexit was here too.

Neither did America realise that Joe Biden really did help to restore confidence in the U.S., we began to thaw. Only to see the utmost hypocracy of Jim Jordan and James Comer perpetually lying to the media by going after Hunter Biden with Russian operatives and propaganda like it was a good thing for the U.S..

We saw it all, they destroyed the decency of the U.S. for what? Or who more like? Suddenly America was the buckaroo everyone despised.

And we still do. There's no honour in this administration whatsoever. Zero. Zilch. We hate it.

We can see the good people of your nation, but we cannot intervene it is an American thing. But when America decides to put away the childish things and grow up, she is a baby nation afterall, the idea of the American constitution, the document that made you great, we will take you back eventually.

But America needs to realise that the U.S. reputation has been destroyed, blown apart, non-existent.

Until then we will keep your daughters and we will look after them, they are most welcome and loved as our own family.
