The most important stories are hidden from the American people. How about Dean Blundell's reporting on the current financial situation in the U.S.?

"Interest on the debt has now officially blown past both National Defense and Medicare. Sit with that. Interest Is Now America’s Second-Biggest “Program” The only line item still bigger is Social Security — and the CBO says interest catches that too, eventually.

"The debt is now eating 18.6% of every tax dollar collected. It’s blowing past the post-WWII record as a share of the economy. And it compounds: every old cheap bond that matures gets refinanced at today’s higher rates, which means the interest bill grows even if Washington doesn’t borrow another dime. Which — lol — it will. About $2 trillion worth this year.

"This is why “we can’t afford higher rates” isn’t a talking point. It’s arithmetic. The US government is now the most rate-sensitive borrower on Earth, and its president spends his mornings screaming at the Fed chair on social media to cut. He’s not doing that for your mortgage. He’s doing it because his own budget detonates if rates stay here.

"So Where’s the Money Going? Glad You Asked.

Now, let’s be precise about the anatomy of this disaster, because precision is what makes it damning.

(1) THE BIG WOUND IS SELF-INFLICTED TAX POLICY.

>Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill is projected to pile roughly $6.9 trillion onto the debt over ten years.

> Corporate tax receipts are already down $94 billion — a 24% collapse — this fiscal year because of the bill’s giveaways.

>And the tariffs that were supposed to pay for it all? After the Supreme Court torched most of them, Treasury spent July refunding $33 billion in tariffs — customs revenue actually ran negative $8.5 billion for the month. The “tariffs will pay off the debt” plan is now literally a line item where America pays money OUT.

(2) THE SECOND WOUND IS THE DEPORATION-INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX. The same bill shoveled $170.7 billion into immigration and border enforcement — more than the annual budget of every state and local police force in America combined. ICE alone got roughly $75 billion on top of its normal ~$10 billion budget, making it the best-funded law enforcement agency in the country, including $45 billion just for detention camps — more than the Obama, Biden, and first Trump administrations spent on detention put together, and five times the budget of the entire federal prison system. And because it was rammed through reconciliation, huge chunks of it — including a $10 billion DHS pot with almost no strings attached that even immigration analysts openly call a slush fund — come with virtually zero congressional oversight. They’re back for more, too: this spring’s follow-up bill sought another $70 billion for ICE and CBP."

And on it goes. To the $40 TRILLION debt the U.S. holds. It's beyond comprehension. And what does the future hold in this pathetically mismanaged financial situation in our nation? Three guesses.

Myriad stories like this, man, Thanks for sharing.

This one really blew my mind. And thank you for allowing me so much space in your Comment section. Dean is Canadian and therefore knows a lot more about what's going on in our country than we do. (And if that doesn't chill you down to your marrow, I don't know what will.) Same goes for the British papers. I subscribe to The Guardian, and never cease to be amazed at stories they report from the U.S., important stories, stories which we never hear.

Thank you, Mr. Stephens.

You're right, Earl, and I'd go further. Nineteen months in and we're still watching the press debate tone while the country burns down around them. There's no "both sides" left to report on. There's what's happening and there's everybody too scared or too paid to say it plainly. I've spent decades trying to talk this through with neighbors, trying to find the man across the fence, and I'm running out of patience for that too, watching what's being done while we're all still being polite about it. Keep writing it exactly this hot. Somebody has to.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

I guess so, man.

I've had it.

The mainstream media is complicit. The major news outlets are scared to death of Trump. Each one only wants to protect its ass ets. They pick and choose and normalize every story bc they don’t want Trump’s ire. They think they are reporting but all they are doing is being lackeys. Power demands strength. He will pick them off one by one. Just like he does to Congress. This isn’t about competition or ratings or which outlet gets the “breaking news” first. It isn’t about the bottom line. This is about the first amendment which will soon be MEANINGLESS. This is uncharted territory and they need to wake up! Freedom of the press IS the “Exclusive” of each day. Shout out the TRUTH! It’s not all about ratings. Their individual competitive stories are like flies on dead meat. This is not business as usual. ANALYZE! QUESTION! FIGHT BACK! but do it together as a united front. Don’t forget who you are. Gather your best news people from all 3 networks and give us one united front in our face each day. We need cooperation that will stand up to this AUTOCRAT and fight for freedom of the press. Focus on what we can do together not shock us with endless details of Trumps distraction of the day. The people in the streets of Minneapolis knew this. We as citizens deserve nothing less.

The word of the day: COMPLICIT. The mainstream media and the feckless RepubliCon party are all COMPLICIT in TRump's thievery of our nation. I'll be surprised if there's anything left in our treasury after this greedy piece of human garbage is done pilfering everything he can from our coffers. I am PISSED OFF, and I'm not alone. If I was able to, I'd scream in the faces of these so-called journalist, who whitewash and remove the stink off of every thing TRump says and does. I can't even watch the news anymore, because I am so utterly disgusted by the half-truths and outright LIES being spread by those who are supposed to report what's really happening. Sorry for the rant, but I'm mad as Hell and I'm not going to take it anymore! We MUST vote in huge numbers in November if we want to keep our constitutional republic. If we continue down this road, the United States of America will become a full-blown fascist state. #VOTEALLBLUE!🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

Bill John's avatar

That's the fat pigs strategy, Megan. Every day another thieving, conning, lying, bullying, murderous, treasonous act of fuckery to take our minds off the outrageous fuckery of the day before. Not all of it will fall into the immunity bag that our scandalous six Jurists saw fit to give him, after being paid off and bribed themselves by a billionaire or two. And if there is ANY justice for lawbreakers left in our country, we will be able to send him to prison on those charges. That will be my happiest day and my new favorite "holiday", when those steel doors clang shut behind Dictator Dumold Trump. Remember the Epstein Files!!!

Keith Frohreich's avatar

Without a doubt, more than any other entity, our corporate media created Trump and is complicit in his continued reign. There used to be three stalwart national newspapers: New York Times, LA Times and The Post. No longer. The New York Times is the best of the three, but boy have they been complicit in a lot of areas. In SoCal, where I live, here is the lead story of the LA Times today: "Voters split over wealth tax." Next to it is a poll showing the tax is favored 48-41. Inside the story continues with this headline: "Failure of billionaire tax to crack 50% support could be a red flag." Previous stories were designed to drive a wedge into the coalition, with the state employees board staying neutral. I sent them an email asking why I should continue to support a union who is neutral on taxing billionaires. Sometimes the LA Times calls it a wealth tax and sometimes they call it a billionaire tax. It is a billionaire tax. Most of us think that anyone earning a million a year is wealthy, many even less than that. The LA Times strategy is clearly based on protecting their billionaire owner who is a Trump supporter.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

Right on target, Keith. Such subtlety, and so damn damaging.

Why should I continue to support a union who is neutral on taxing billionaires. BINGO.

Thank you, Earl for saying everything that you mentioned in this article About the mainstream media -

When the oligarchs can purchase the companies we get our news from and then threaten everybody who works for them to provide propaganda and misinformation that benefits the oligarchs then we the people are in serious jeopardy- thanks to all the independent journalists on substack that keep us informed about what is really happening under this corrupt regime -

I am holding out hope that we can remove this wannabe king and his cowardly greedy puppets from power no matter how much money the republicans throw at the main stream media that are complicit in this attack on our democracy

(Remember Hungary just recently did it)

The LAT strategy is dear daughter protecting her daddy, who’s gone from alleged cancer cures (cash only of course to sorry my cure won’t work for you) to kissing the obese stinky ass of the decaying PedoFelon. They’re all lying greedy media whores.

I would LOVE to see a story by a journalist (with a spinal cord) about how Trump got $2 billion dollars richer since assuming the Presidency. I also would like some reporting on what "gifts" from foreign governments disappeared during his first and now 2nd administration. Also, could someone please explain how a plane gifted to the US government and decked out with millions of dollars of hi-tech equipment becomes this loathsome creature's parting gift assuming he ever leaves? Who's paying for removing the equipment...the U.S. taxpayer? I thought there were limits on gifts that a President can keep. You KNOW it's not going into a 'library' because he's illiterate. He'll be flying around in it and probably charging us for his gas. And please, please take away any protections for his ADULT children ASAP and put them under investigation starting with son-in-law Jared and first daughter Ivanka as well as Uday and Qusay Trump.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

You need a job as an assignment editor in one of these broken newsrooms.

Bill John's avatar

Congress has the say so on what happens to that plane. I THINK that the Pres is only allowed to accept a "gift" if it's valued at a couple hun or so.

Fat Peg's avatar

I scroll thru You Tube videos more than I'd like to admit. (My rationale is I'm in Home-traction for hours and scrolling helps w boredom.) Anyhoo, I've been surprised that independent YT Journalists were the 1st reporting several breaking new stories. I think ABC is trying to do right as the orange menace has his FCC goon on their tail.

Now for some (hopefully) comic relief thoughts:

Do you think DJT cowardly hid in the catering truck or was he there already on a burger search?

Did KKKatherine resign because DT's new young blonde bimbo flew Safeway Air while she was left behind on the Bait Plane?

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

Thanks for the comic relief. I am obviously running hot today, Peg.

Fat Peg's avatar

I'm not sure DT himself CAN plan but his bakers may know driving us to into frenzied distraction and/or despair weakens us. So, humor keeps me semi-same and I share because I know I AM FUNNY....but looks aren't everything.

Just yesterday I started to lose my cool with a guy who was advocating for being open to the other side (Republicans). He meant well but, that's not the way it is today. The reporting on & of this regime has been to normalize its behavior, and its actions / inactions. And it has worked on too many folk's. The news media is complicit in trying its best to both siding everything. This too has worked on too many folk's.

There are NO TWO SIDES FOR ME!

Not with this regime!!!!!!!

There is only one side I'm on, and Trump, every elected official with an ( R ) attached to their title, those that donated to them, voted for them, elected them, and still support them, are NOT welcomed !!!!!!

Thank you for posting this today. I feel vindicated from yesterday's spat with the other guy.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

Thanks for giving it a read, Gregg.

Thank you! Trump is right about one thing..."without me the media would have nothing to write about".

Today I watched Katy Tur and used a stopwatch to time commercials. 26 minutes of 95% drug related ads! The rest of 34 minutes was nothing but Trump,Trump,Trump. Not floods across the midwest or fires in the west or a hurricane barreling into Hawaii ( we dont even rate a national weather map), or mass poverty, rampant and growing homeless now deemed criminals for sleeping in their cars!

Our biggest AM station on Maui was taken ovver by FOX...Hannity et al 24/ 7... we have no local paper at all! My grandfather was Chief Editor of the Newport Daily News, one of the oldest. As a Republican he denouced the party during Vietnam.

Thanks for the rant. You have a platform i appreciate down here in the underworld of seniors about to be homeless. Ill share

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

Thanks for enduring all that so I didn't have to, Bruce.

Have a good Friday evening.

If you research biggest advertisers of news media and how much they spend then you know who owns them and who they are targeting. Apparently we are a sick country with cures for diseases Ive never heard of. No other country in the world allows drug ads.

It comes as no surprise that the majority of media outlets in America have been bought. By whom? The very people bent on crushing America into dust, for the profit of Oligarchs.

Impeachment has to happen NOW, and without delay. However, people are indeed very scared. Trump and Co. is a criminal organization. You're heard about some politicians and even judges getting death threats? Guess who sent people to make those threats? They don't just threaten someone, they also threaten to harm their family members.

Members of Congress report getting threats. They are likely being told to vote a certain way...or else.

If I were physically able, I would help fight to get America back from the hands of cheap thugs, inept punks, and the extremely wealthy who are no better than a Mafia Don.

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

Just keep speaking up, and never shut up, Franky.

You are absolutely right, Earl. The media hasn't been "fair" in their reporting on Democrats and the sick and dysfunctional GOP. Why don't they report on how many times Diaper Don's diapers need to be changed each day and who is doing this job? They must pay her (must be a her) well to be his diaper nurse, it's a very demanding job, 24/7. Hey, it's news about the criminal con man who loves to be the center of attention. Let him get the headline news every single day. So people can see how dysfunctional and sick this ass* really is (sorry I can't call him a man, as he's way below that), and how much taxpayers are paying for his incontinence. Not to mention his cognitive decline and his constant incoherent rants every time he opens his big foul mouth. All this news deserves front page reporting, among his lawlessness and corruption. The American people need to know why on earth the 25th has not been invoked or why hasn't the spineless M. Johnson initiated impeachment hearings?

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

It's insane how normal they have allowed this to become, Sue.

If the fake Iranian threat, pushed by Israel, happened and Iran shot down Air Force One and killed all the air crew and those journalists on board, (notice, I don't give a shit about the cabinet members) I wonder if all the remaining MSM "journalists" would just continue their puff pieces? Or blame Joe Biden?

Mr. D.'s avatar

I can see it now, “Biden asleep at wheel. No survivors.”

D. Earl Stephens ✍️'s avatar

I have no doubt they would.
